Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche culture, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A dazzling electrum applique of a feline head with turquoise stone eyes and remains of cinnabar pigments. The sheet was hammered into a rounded shape, and the visage has a classic minimalistic approach: a rectangular bared tooth mouth, T- shaped nose, and recessed eye sockets for the turquoise. The brow is pierced for suspension as an impressive adornment for a chieftain or incredibly important warrior figure. The Moche associated felines such as jaguars and pumas with power and strength, artisans often focused on these animals' faces - in particular their fanged mouths, as seen in this piece. The cat method of attacking and severing the neck / spine area of prey was comparative to decapitation, and Moche also practiced the taking of trophy heads. This applique must have commanded awe and respect due to the symbolic representation and precious electrum material! Size: 2" L x 2" W (5.1 cm x 5.1 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand; electrum quality: 65.8% to 66.6% gold, 28% silver, and 3.2% to 3.6% copper; weight: 7.8 grams
