Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche / Chimu, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A beautiful gold bracelet comprised of a flat 10K+ gold bangle adorned with fifty four 18K+ gold granules. Any goldwork from the Moche is exceedingly rare, as their treasures were targeted by plunderers during Colonial times. See a discussion below regarding the scarcity of Moche goldworks as explained by Heidi King of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Weight: 8.6 grams. Gold quality: granules - 82% gold, equivalent to 18K+; bangle - 50%, equivalent to 10K+. Size: 2.75" L x 2.625" W (7 cm x 6.7 cm); opening measures 2.3" L x 2.25" W (5.8 cm x 5.7 cm)
Heidi King of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York states in "The Art of Precolumbian Gold": "The Mochica or Moche as they are also known, built their capital in the dry, coastal valley of Moche, where the main construction was the Huaca del Sol, the so-called Pyramid of the Sun, the largest adobe structure built in Pre-Columbian South America. The great pyramid, made of over 143 million adobe bricks, was clearly visible and easily accessible during Colonial times, and it received extraordinary attentions from early treasure hunters (Bray this volume). As a result of such attentions, little of the wealth in precious metals that the Moche peoples are believed to have possessed remains in its ancient form today. Those works that do remain are all the more important because of their rarity." (The Art of Precolumbian Gold: The Jan Mitchell Collection" edited by Julie Jones. Boston: Little Brown & Company, 1985, p. 212)
The Chimu were cultural successors to the Moche and continued their tradition of defining social power through conspicuous wealth. When Chimu monarchs lived, they were also regarded as deities; when they died, they retained that status and were buried in special compounds with a great deal of treasure.

Condition
Missing some granules as shown. Bangle is a tad misshapen but still presents a generally circular form. Granules show expected indentations and minor fissures here and there. Gold has developed a charming age patina.
