Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 CE. A magnificent bichrome pottery bowl on a concave disc foot, decorated with two dramatic visages of the god Ai Apaec delineated in low to high relief, one on each side. The deity is depicted with a wrinkled anthropomorphic face that also presents jaguar fangs and a double jaguar headdress. Ai Apaec appears to be undergoing a transformation from human to wild feline with his bulging eyes, sharp fangs, severely wrinkled skin, and the jaguar headdress which presents two wild felines in profile - each one with beady eyes, a pointy snout, and an open mouth bearing intimidating fangs. Above both Ai Apaec faces and encircling the vessel just below the rim is a register of repeated step motifs, each one topped by a curled tail that may also reference the mighty jaguar. Size: 11.875" in diameter x 6.125" H (30.2 cm x 15.6 cm)
The jaguar symbolized dominance and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with the jaguar, the largest and strongest feline of the ancient Americas. Ai Apaec, the principal Moche god, wears a headdress adorned with a jaguar head and paws and important mortals donned similar headdresses. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. Oddly enough, few Moche artists would have actually seen jaguars as they are not indigenous to the coast; jaguars prefer moist forest conditions. However, scholars believe that some cubs were transported over the mountains for Moche rituals and it is also possible that some jaguars wandered down the coast. Jaguars were also thought to possess great spiritual force; and shamans were believed to transform into such creatures.
