**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche 4, classic period, ca. 400 to 500 CE. A fascinating stirrup vessel of elaborate figural form, depicting a living human woman in a sexual situation with a skeletal man. Both are seated, the woman with one arm around the skeleton's back, the other stroking the erect phallus of the skeleton. The skeleton has one arm draped around the woman, the other touching her chest and neck. His thin legs are crossed and his skull face is upturned towards the viewer, with the deep, hollow eye sockets and mouth full of leering teeth emphasized by the artist. The woman stares straight ahead with large eyes. Wrinkles on her face, especially between her eyes and around her mouth, indicate age. The skeleton is dressed in a hooded cloak so that from behind the two figures appear to both be human. The large stirrup handle projects from the back of the skeleton. Size: 7.95" L x 5.7" W x 7.75" H (20.2 cm x 14.5 cm x 19.7 cm)
Moche art depicts three realms: the land of living humans, the land of the dead, and the land of the supernatural. The land of the dead is populated by animated skeletons, and these figures seem capable of easily penetrating the world of the living. Sexual interaction between these worlds is depicted on Moche art in two ways: human women with skeletons and human women with supernatural beings. Here and on other known examples, the white slip on the skeletal figure contrasts strongly with the lively red color on the living woman, with only the phallus seeming fleshy and real on the skeleton. This may have been to emphasize the life after death of male potency, and its ability to outlast death.
