Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Late Moche, Moche V, ca. 700 CE. A fabulous mold-made, bichrome terracotta frog effigy spouted vessel of an endearingly expressive form with bulging eyes, a wide slit mouth, and legs poised to leap. A single spout emerges from the top center, flanked by perforated loops for suspension. The surface is hand-painted in a stunning red-on-cream color scheme with two large red ovals bordered in a running meander motif flanking the visage and decorated rear legs - one with concentric circles and the other with nested chevron motifs. The neck features a stylized quadrated circular motif, and the feet and facial features are nicely delineated in relief. A wonderful vessel demonstrating superior command of technique and medium as well as embodying meaningful symbolism - in the Pre-Columbian world, the frog (rana) was associated with rain, the sustenance that it brings about, and fertility. Size: 7" L x 6" W x 6.375" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 16.2 cm)
