Pre-Columbian, Mexico, modern day Oaxaca, Puebla or Guerrero, Mixtec culture, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. An elegant polychrome pedestal vessel finely finished with mesmerizing iconographic/decorative program in red, orange, black, and beige hues. The vessel's form is comprised of an inverted piriform body that is supported by a dramatically flared concave pedestal base. The most exciting motif presented on this vase is a central register of skulls or trophy heads alternating with crossbones. The heads are depicted in profile possessing an aggressive demeanor with open mouths revealing bared teeth and large bulging eyes that frighten with their penetrating gazes. Decorative forms perhaps intended to represent headdresses adorn the skulls as well. Above and below are registers that feature abstract geometric and curvilinear forms inspired by nature. Size: 5.75" in diameter x 12.25" H (14.6 cm x 31.1 cm)
Above the register of crossbones & heads/skulls we have: intertwining serpentine forms followed by a band of circular egg-like motifs followed by a wide register of stylized geometrics that may have been inspired by wings or feathers. Below it, on the lower body, is a rather complex register comprised of checkerboard, dotted, wavy, and well as bird wing motifs. Finally, the flared base presents additional bands of geometric motifs that conjure a thatched roof above doorways of an edifice. A beautiful form, replete with a wondrous iconographic and decorative program.
