Native American, Southern United States, Arkansas, Poinsett County, Mississippian culture, ca. 1140 to 1420 CE. A charming effigy pottery vessel, in the form of a seated woman with a stylized visage that juts forward from the neck. The long, thin arms extend out and rest on the tips of the stubby legs. The face is roughly triangular, coming to a gentle point at the chin, and ears with perforations protrude from the sides. The mouth is slightly open, and the nose juts outward. The figure is nude with small pinched breasts, a belly button, and genitalia. A circular opening at the top of the head leads to the interior. Most striking is the verso which features the curvature of the spine and incised lines to indicate individual bones. Interesting attention to details on this piece! Size: 6.36" W x 8" H (16.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
Human effigy vessels represent the culmination of hundreds of years of Mississippian art, of creating stronger pottery using temper, discovering how to fire it, and creating pigments. These vessels follow a similar form: a kneeling human figure, often female, and with a pronounced, hunched back. Some researchers have speculated that this is because people with that condition had a special role in society - they were considered magical or shamanic, for example. Others point out that it may be a practical consideration, with the shape of the vessel requiring a slightly hunched back in order to increase liquid capacity
