Native American, Southeast or Midwest, Mississippian, ca. 1200 CE. A striking anthropomorphic pottery vessel that rests on a flat base with a deep interior cavity and exterior walls molded with a stylized face in a warm red clay. The mouth is molded with rounded lips, spaced apart to display a row of incised lines as teeth. The thin angular nose protrudes above with a perforation through the septum, perhaps for a separate nose ring ornament. The eye lids jut slightly outward to encircle the rounded coffee bean shaped eyes set in the center. The ears protrude outward and are pierced in four areas along the edge that are threaded with shell bead earrings. The earrings are comprised of ancient disc beads carved from white and light pink shells and strung on four strands of modern thread. This distinct vessel head is unique with the dangling ornamentation and was perhaps used for ritualistic purposes. Size: 5.62" W x 6.12" H (14.3 cm x 15.5 cm)
Artisans of Mississippian societies created extensively decorated pottery vessels in a broad range of forms, many made for ritual use. The iconography on these pieces offer intriguing glimpses of their cultural/religious beliefs and practices. Figures of humans and animals, such as bear, opossum, and rabbit, represent Middle World- the inhabited surface of the Earth. John House has identified exquisite examples of these images on Mississippian ceramic vessels from sites in the central Mississippi Valley.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
