Native American, Tennessee, Mississippian, ca. 1160 to 1400 CE. A lovely pottery vessel in a hue of deep grey with a flat, circular base and thick walls that rise to an annular rim. The rim of this ancient vessel is adorned with two handles in the form of animal heads; an avian creature on one side, which displays a horizontally drilled eye hole, a petite beak, and three-pointed crest feathers, as well as an anthropomorphic or zoomorphic head on the other, featuring incised eyes, a delineated nose, and a heavy brow. Size: 9" in diameter x 6.5" H (22.9 cm x 16.5 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated.

Condition
TL holes under avian head and on base. Collection label and collection number written on base. Both heads have been reattached with restoration over break lines and top point of avian head restored. Minor repair to rim. Expected surface wear as shown. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits.
