Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. An intriguing architectural model example of a temple facade with a broad, tiered base with an incised set of stairs leading up to the cavernous ovoid opening. The two-post model is surmounted by a tapered roofline with a wide periphery. Mezcala sculptural houses or temples began to intrigue collectors after the infamous ethnologist and art historian Miguel Covarrubias published a seminal paper on the subject. Size: 1.625" W x 2.4" H (4.1 cm x 6.1 cm); 3.9" H (9.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Stone models in the Mezcala style come largely from the present-day state of Guerrero, in southwest Mexico. A particularly long-lived tradition, these works may have been produced over some one thousand years, from as early as 500 BCE. According to Dr. Carlo Gay, "Of all the great variety of artifacts in the vast spectrum of the Mezcala tradition, architectural models are the most provocative and unique. As a reflection of the intellectual and cultural climate in which they were created, they evidence a refined society of remarkable creativity and aesthetic sensibility. Not merely magic objects of ritual, nor esoteric adjuncts of some cult, they were also, or instead, tokens of love and faith to accompany the dead - in essence, exalting symbols of man's lasting aspiration for eternal life."
