Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. This is a charming votive horse figurine or pendant, cast from copper with both stylized and naturalistic elements. The horse stands on four delineated legs, and can balance upright as a statuette, but also has a suspension hole pierced through the neck, perhaps to wear as a pendant. The neck is exaggerated, the dramatically curved neck and mane are stylized, but the rounded body suggests a naturalistic quality. Luristani craftsmen produced high quality bronze objects for a class of nomadic horse lords whose love of their animals shines through clearly in the decorative items they commissioned. Size: 1.35" L x 0.45" W x 1.45" H (3.4 cm x 1.1 cm x 3.7 cm)
