- Lot Description
Ancient Near East, Anatolia, ca. late 2nd millennium BCE. A near-miniature, cast-bronze bull, a symbol of both fertility and virility in the ancient world. The slender body of the figurine stands atop four tubular legs with stylized feet, with a sinuous tail draped across its posterior. A naturalistic dewlap detailed with several finely-incised bands hangs in front of the stocky neck. A broad snout, incised mouth, almond-shaped eyes, perky ears, and a flat brow form the animal's visage, with a prominent pair of curved horns projecting from the top of the head. The body of the beast is coated in a smooth, emerald-green patina with scattered areas of dark-green patina as well. A wonderful example! Size: 2.75" L x 2.45" H (7 cm x 6.2 cm).
