Southeast Asia, Indonesia, South Sulawesi, Toraja people, ca. 1950s CE. A gorgeous wood carving of rectangular form made to decorate a traditional ancestral house, known as a tongkonan, which is considered the center of Toraja social and spiritual life. Like this example, each carving bares a geometric motif that has an individual name and is painted in hues of red - the color of blood and symbolic of human life, white - the color of bone - for purity, yellow for God's blessing and power, and black for death and darkness. Boasting an intricately incised decoration, this beautiful example is adorned with the abstract relief of a betel leaf, known as pa'don bolu sangbua, beneath a stylized border resembling the loose tuft on the side of a rooster, known as pa'bulu londong. As no writing exists within the Toraja language, these carved wood decorations, called Pa'ssura (the writing), are used by Toraja people to express social and religious concepts. In this example, the betel leaf motif communicates the importance of a social life, while the rooster feather pattern conveys courage and wisdom. A suspension rope is attached to the back of this lovely piece, allowing it to be displayed. Size: 19.25" W x 25.125" H (48.9 cm x 63.8 cm)
Frequently used as an offering to the gods, the betel leaf holds an important place in Toraja society and is not only an everyday item of consumption, but is also believed to be a medium of contact with deities.

Seven drill holes throughout incised face from previous use as architectural decoration. Some loss to top, as well as stable fissures, nicks/chips, abrasions, and softening of detail throughout. Otherwise, very nice with liberal remains of pigments.
