Indonesia, North Sumatra, Batak culture, mid 20th century CE. A skillfully hand-carved whimsical sculpture depicting a male figure riding a mythological dragon-like creature created by the Batak peoples. In addition to its imaginative form, the artist paid great attention to the details and carved surface 'scales'. Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of closely related Austronesian ethnic groups predominantly found in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This piece may have been used in healing and divination ceremonies by a guru or priest. Batak society has traditionally revered datuk (animist priests)and gurus who practiced medicine and were believed to possess supernatural powers and the power to predict the future. Condition
The dragon-like creature's tail was reattached. Losses to creature's ears, nose, tail, and other high-pointed areas. Chips to rider's chin, nose, lips, arm cuffs, and other high-pointed areas. Otherwise, the carving is in very good condition save normal surface wear commensurate with age. Cord and wooden hook also show expected age wear.
