Carlton Eshun Mural Arts Takoradi (Ghana) - mid 20th century CE. Signed on the lower right and painted in a vibrant color palette on heavy gauge cloth, a large-scale composition depicting a ritualistic gathering of four draped individuals in the foreground. From right to left: a man wearing a single-shouldered yellow and blue garment with a white belt, holding a cup of milk in his right hand and a leashed white goat in his left hand; a woman dressed in green and red with a white sash as well, holding a vessel with both hands on her head; a bare-chested male wrapped with a white lower garment with one hand on the vessel and the other hand raising what appear to be burning branches; and finally, a man donning a single shouldered red and white garment with a white sash wrapped around his waist, holding a bottle - perhaps medicine or a libation. Size: 48" W x 40.25" H (121.9 cm x 102.2 cm)
Beside him is a low lying table with a pot of what appear to be eggs in a red liquid; then a tall tree with a white sash tied around its trunk. Beyond the fence are thatch-roofed houses and woods.
Muralism in Africa is a centuries-old tradition, and due to the climate in countries such as Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and South Africa, murals are repainted or restored each year following the rainy season. Perhaps, this work, painted on fabric, was used as a model for a mural that decorated a wall - or, perhaps rather than being painted directly to architecture, the composition was painted on fabric so as to be more portable and/or permanent.
Provenance: private Aryl Hatt collection, Boulder County, Colorado, USA; acquired from Leo Hakola Collection, La Barge, Wyoming, USA; Mr. Hakola acquired the painting in 1989 from South African collectors (last name Pretorious) who owned a shop in Sun Valley, Idaho, USA
