Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A beautiful example of a kris (keris) of a smaller size than typical kris swords. The abstract Jawa Demam figural handle is hand-carved from dugong ivory and exhibits intricate scroll-work motifs across its entire surface. An inverted, bell-shaped, high-grade (92.5%+) silver separator rests between the handle and the pointed blade guard. The steel blade has a slightly wavy profile with a sharpened tip and undulating waves of lighter material. The beautiful wooden sheath is carved from polished caramel-hued wood, boasts a form-fitting silver (92.5%+) jacket replete with foliate and linear motifs in repousse, and is capped on the bottom with an ovoid dugong ivory button. Size: 13.375" L x 4" W (34 cm x 10.2 cm); length of blade: 10" L (25.4 cm); quality of silver: 92.5% or higher.
The ivory on this item pre-dates 1900 and was acquired long before the 1970 ban on ivory trade. Please note that ivory from any species cannot be shipped to the US States of California, Hawaii, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington State. As of 2019, they will not be able to be shipped to Illinois.

Very minor nicks to blade, sheath, handle, and sheath cap, with light softening to some finer details, and minor abrasions, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina to wood and silver elements, and light earthen deposits within some recessed areas.
