Western/Central Europe, Austria or Germany, ca. mid to late 18th century CE. A beautiful example of a Jaeger .58 caliber hunting rifle with a gorgeous stock carved from walnut wood. The backstock has a thick butt with a brass panel as well as a projecting cheek rest on one side. The other side of the backstock features a removable rectangular slat that reveals a hidden storage compartment within. The trigger is protected by an elegantly carved wooden guard with two curled terminals that act as rests for the ring and pinky fingers, and swirling foliate motifs are etched on the hammer of the flintlock firing mechanism. The octagonal barrel has a brass sight at one end and a smooth interior absent of any rifling grooves, and a brass-tipped ram rod is housed underneath. Size: 52.25" L (132.7 cm)
