Roberto Morales (Mexican, Contemporary). Signed "Roberto 1973" on verso of pendant. The artistry of this necklace is beyond impressive. Comprised of a large natural turquoise stone from Durango, Mexico boasting blue-green hues with creamy beige, almond brown, and soft white inclusions that is accompanied by four beautifully faceted gemstones (one amethyst, one garnet, and two tourmalines), all set in a finely crafted sterling silver setting with brass accents, and suspended from an imaginatively delineated chain (also sterling silver with brass accents). Size: pendant measures 4.75" L x 2.875" W (12.1 cm x 7.3 cm); turquoise measures 2" L x 1.5" W (5.1 cm x 3.8 cm); chain is 18" L (45.7 cm)
Turquoise has been a coveted gemstone in Mexico for hundreds of years. Teotihuacan turquoise masks date back to ca. 200 CE; the Toltec civilization traded turquoise with northern civilizations during the 8th century, and the later Aztecs also adored turquoise. Expert jeweler Roberto Morales honors the ancients' admiration for this stone with beautiful works of wearable art like this example.
