Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1899 CE. A charming ex-voto, hand-painted and inscribed on a rolled out tin can. The text below the image generally translates, "In Matehuala, San Louis Potosi on March 11th of 1899 I had a nosebleed that would last for five days. Believing that I was in danger of death - and given that my affliction was so great - I reached out to people for help and all efforts were futile. Then, I asked the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos (of the lakes) for a miracle … I make this declarative statement of thanksgiving to the Almighty for the whole world to see that when they ask for miracles with ardent faith, God is the source of mercies for the destitute. Maria Zauala" Size: 12.625" W x 4.75" H (32.1 cm x 12.1 cm)
The painting above the neatly written text presents a draped woman, presumably the author and subject of the ex-voto, holding a large lit candle and praying to the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos appearing before her. She prays in a beautiful natural landscape with blue skies of the celestial realm above.
Ex-votos are little story paintings that tell us so much about the values of Mexican peoples and their visual culture. These votive paintings were hung in a church or placed adjacent to a santo in order to celebrate and give thanks for the recovery of the donor from an illness or dangerous situation. In essence, ex-votos represent the spiritual or physical gains received by the donor. These paintings include hand painted passages that relate the details of the cure or the rescue. Typically, however, this commentary is replete with regional dialect and somewhat tricky to translate. Nevertheless, familiarity with the Spanish language allows one to understand the gist of these wonderful narrative paintings.
