Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. late 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A charming pottery relief panel depicting 2 figures and a horse. The noble steed strides right, exhibiting remarkably giant proportions in comparison to his human companions and mounted by 1 figure who bends both outstretched arms at the elbows, carrying a stick of spear in one hand and the horse's reigns in the other. The other figure walks slightly ahead, wears a skirt, and raises both arms while bending them at the elbows. An indentation on the verso suggests that this piece was previously attached to another object or surface. This fascinating image may have represented a ceremonial, religious, or royal procession. Size: 4.4" W x 3.1" H (11.2 cm x 7.9 cm)

Condition
Repaired from at least 3 pieces. Fragment of a larger piece with loss to feet of figures. Expected abrasions and softening of detail, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits and rich encrustations.
