Prehistoric, Miocene to Pliocene period, ca. 28 to 3.6 million years ago. A gorgeous fossilized Megalodon tooth of a classic "V" shape and displaying beautiful shades of grey, black, and tan. The finely polished exterior is adorned with remarkable natural decoration, consisting of a deep black and auburn colored center surrounded by a charcoal grey perimeter that fades to a light blue-grey on the front, mottled smokey-grey and cream hues with blackened edges on the backside, and black and charcoal-grey upper tooth and root areas. Natural tones of tan, russet, and ochre speckle the entire cuspid, glistening under the luster of the polish, as if the tooth was embellished with gold or copper flakes. Several vertical striations along the upper enamel are a result of the fossilization process. A stunning curiosity that grants a humbling perspective on the size and timespan of our own species! Size: 4.1875" L x 3.125" W (10.6 cm x 7.9 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Meaning "big tooth", the Megalodon was one of the most powerful predators to roam the earth, estimated to grow up to 59 feet long! Teeth are all that remain of these ancient creatures, whose skeletal structures - like those of all sharks - were made of cartilage and did not fossilize when they became extinct 3.6 million years ago. Interestingly, a megalodon's age at death can be determined by the growth rings radiating from the centra of the tooth.
