Islamic world, Medieval Period, ca. 1000 CE. A delightful ceramic ewer in the form of a rooster, with a heart-shaped body. Extending from one side is the tall neck and head of the animal, with a bright red comb and hackle. Instead of a beak there is a tiny spout. A spray of tail feathers extends from the other side. At the center of the back is a small, round mouth with a thick rim. Two curved, strap handles extend from either side of the mouth. The coiled construction of the body gives the impression of feathers. The vessel stands on a short disc foot. Size: 12.25" W x 12.25" H (31.1 cm x 31.1 cm)
Rooster vessels are common in Islamic art from this time period, including from Saljuq Iran. Similar ewers with phoenix forms produced by the Tang Dynasty in China may have been inspirational, as the two disparate regions were well connected by trade along the Silk Road.
