Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of squat form with a thick rim and a wide, shallow basin. With highly burnished surfaces and polychrome decoration, the vessel rests upon a trio of tab-shaped legs, each with a petite perforation intended to hold a petite rattle ball. Black stripes and solid orange areas decorate the basin interior while sets of large red spirals, concentric columns, checkerboard patterns, and a trio of abstract avian creatures adorn the exterior surfaces. Condition
One stable fissure stemming from rim, with extensive nicks and spalls within basin, abrasions and chipping to pigment, and light encrustations across exterior, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to pigment and zoomorphic motifs.
