Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. A spectacular stone sculpture of the head of a water bird, likely a cormorant, featuring a long beak with a downward-pointing bulge on the tip, huge, almond-shaped eyes, and arched brows, all surmounted by a horizontal crest of feathers. Scrolling motifs embellish the cheeks, while incised circles decorate the top of the head and recessed dots line the areas beneath each eye. The Maya regarded the cormorant as a liminal being, able to traverse three distinct environments: it flies in the sky, perches on land, and hunts fish by swimming deep under water. This was considered extraordinary, signifying the capacity to commune with supernatural beings that inhabit all three layers of the cosmos - a power that Maya kings also claimed to posses. Drill holes at the tip and base of the beak would have allowed for suspension. Size: 9" L x 3.4" W x 3.3" H (22.9 cm x 8.6 cm x 8.4 cm); 7.1" H (18 cm) on included custom stand.
The cormorant bore many additional meanings with which these rulers wished to link themselves - for example, its association with watery realms alludes to fertility and agricultural abundance, which kings needed to ensure so that their community would survive. Water also evoked the distant mythological past, a time before the creation of the present universe when, according to Maya belief, everything was enveloped in a vast sea.

Condition
Chipping with losses to crest on top of head. Some nicks and abrasions so surface, but otherwise very nice presentation with good remaining detail and earthen deposits in areas.
