Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya; El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A lovely set of hand-built pottery bowls from the ancient Maya. First is a Copador type bowl with a round but stable base and a thick rim surrounding the deep basin. The exterior surfaces are decorated with a register of large rectangular panels with petite circles within every other panel as well as a program of abstract, right-facing anthropomorphic figures with raised hands. The second and larger vessel is a flat-bottomed mug - used for consuming the Maya cacao drink - with fluted walls along the lower body and a flared rim on top. The Copador bowl is presented in hues of red and black atop a light orange ground, and the cacao mug bears a uniform brown color. Size (fluted mug): 4.8" W x 4.375" H (12.2 cm x 11.1 cm); (Copador): 5.3" Diameter x 3.375" H (13.5 cm x 8.6 cm)
