Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A delightful ceramic figure of a kneeling woman with an exaggeratedly large head displaying heavy-lidded eyes, a bulbous nose, and full lips held slightly open. A pair of rectangular ears flank her stylized visage. Her ornament suggests a person of high status, with a dramatic headdress, huge earspools, and a beaded necklace. The top of her headdress opens up to her hollow interior, allowing her to also be used as a vessel. This mysterious figure may have been a votive, prayed to at an altar, or placed in a cache as an offering. Size: 5.3" W x 7.9" H (13.5 cm x 20.1 cm)
