Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A wonderful pottery portrait vessel displaying a wide hip, a gently narrowed neck, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a flat, circular foot and adorned in red and black pigments. A fascinating visage projects from the exterior of the vase, presenting huge eyes beneath an arched brow, plump cheeks, a triangular nose, and full lips, all flanked by a pair of sizeable ears with drill holes for suspending ornaments. The remainder of the exterior is decorated with a thick, horizontal band of vertical striations at the middle, which is topped by a strip of incised glyphs. Remains of collection labels on base. Chips to exterior above face, ears, nose, and on rim. Some light nicks and abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with nice earthen deposits on interior and impressive remaining pigments.
