Pre-Columbian, Maya, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A Maya eccentric frog effigy plumbate vessel presenting the amphibian creature wearing a separately created anthropomorphic head-shaped helmet. The vessel body was rendered to depict a stylized frog, with an expressive visage comprised of bulging eyes, pierced nostril, and a downturned mouth, looking upward and donning an incised 'beaded' collar or necklace. The frog's voluminous body stands upon four feet, the front two delineated with incised digits, and additional ornaments are incised on the cylindrical neck of the vessel. The helmet is modeled to represent a human head bedecked with an elaborate nosering, earspools, and a band with a pointed finial over the incised fringe of bangs and long locks of his coiffure. This visage also looks upward to the celestial realm, and the helmet mask lid fits nicely upon the vessel body. A most unique example, replete with artistry and layers of symbolism. In the Pre-Columbian world, the frog (rana) was associated with rain, the sustenance that it brings about, and fertility. Size: 6" W x 8.5" H (15.2 cm x 21.6 cm) Size: 6.125" L x 5.875" W x 8.125" H (15.6 cm x 14.9 cm x 20.6 cm)
Plumbate pottery, created during the Postclassic period, is a highly distinctive, hard grey glazed ware that spread throughout Mesoamerica and Central America; the shiny grey vessels have also fascinated archaeologists, explorers, and collectors. The name comes from the idea that the glaze contains lead, but this has been proven untrue through chemical analysis - instead, it seems that these vessels are merely made from a petrographically distinct type of clay paste.
