Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina/Campeche, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 850 CE. A lovely Maya Jaina terracotta figural rattle depicting the bust of a figure wearing headgear associated with the Mosaic War Serpent. Topped by a large, fanning headdress, the ancient figure is adorned with 3 sizable beaded necklaces, annular ear spools, and a trapezoidal chest piece. Snake-like ornaments hang from the inner peripheries of the headdress, framing the masked visage, which displays huge, almond-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, and a toothy grin showing a pair of lengthy, curved fangs in each corner. A headband with a central medallion and plumage rests at the top of the face. The intriguing figure sits atop a palanquin, which enabled it to be carried in public processions. Two sets of aligned holes on front and back of the stepped palanquin might have once had wooden sticks inserted into them. Size: 4.75" W x 8.75" H (12.1 cm x 22.2 cm)
There is an exact comparable example, probably from the same mold, published in "Hidden Faces of the Maya" by Linda Schele, p.112, plate 18 (Poway, CA: ALTI Publishing, 1997).
