Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina/Campeche, Maya, Classical Period, ca. 550 to 700 CE. A hollow molded terracotta court figure bust with traces of red and blue surface pigment. The figure's bracelet adorned arms are drawn to the stomach, palms flat, fingers pointed downward. A ridge, perhaps representative of a belt, separates the hands from the breasts. Raised bumps on the arms perhaps indicate the spots of a jaguar pelt draped over the shoulders. A necklace around the neck as well as the elaborate headdress, consisting of two protruding pointed cones above the earrings, and a wide brimmed hat, indicates that this figure represents someone of stature. The face is stylistically Maya with an emphasized nose, sloping forehead, and full lips. Jaina Island, off the coast of Yucatan, was a cemetery for high-ranking nobles from the mainland, and this piece was likely a burial figure. Size: 3" W x 5.75" H (7.6 cm x 14.6 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Jaina figures, from an island off the Yucatan peninsula, are noted for their lifelike faces and their immense detail. The clothing that this figure wears almost certainly copies the real clothing of a person in the Classic Maya period. Scholars believe that these figures most likely represented actual people and were produced in Campeche and brought to Jaina Island to be buried with the dead. Fascinatingly, the people around Jaina are the only people in southeastern Mesoamerica who put human figures into graves; everywhere else in the region, figures have only been found in domestic contexts.
