Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine and intact pair of eccentric flints in the form of highly abstract zoomorphic or insect creatures. Both are painstakingly knapped from creamy gray and lavender stones perhaps to use as offerings and to show off the stone-working skills of the craftspeople - note the amazing spiked peripheries! Chert flints are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required training and skill to create elaborate pieces with such precise forms. These eccentric flints were not carved as weapons, but as interesting designs; the larger example here looks like a pincered centipede or beetle, and the other has a curled S-shape, like bat wings or a bird in profile. Both are mounted in a modern wood and glass frame with a textured background and golden accents. This is a wonderful and protected presentation that is ready to display! Size of large flint: 3" L x 1.75" W (7.6 cm x 4.4 cm); frame: 10.25" L x 8.25" W (26 cm x 21 cm)
