Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya Territories, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A gorgeous hand carved jadeite amulet of a rough rectangular shape and lovely verdant green, sienna, and cream hues. A perforation tunnels lengthwise through the stone, allowing it to be worn as a necklace or bracelet. The front of the pendant is covered in incised lines forming an intriguing zoomorphic image with a long body, four legs, and a spiked back, indicating that it may be a reptile. Reptiles were frequently carved on jade as they were thought to symbolize fertility, or the Maya creator god, Itzamna. The smooth underside of the pendant is naturally adorned with inclusions in shades of green and beige. A stunning and rare piece of ancient Maya culture! Please note that the cord for suspension is not included. Size: 2.25" L x 1.5" W x 0.4375" H (5.7 cm x 3.8 cm x 1.1 cm)
Jadeite was revered by the Maya not only for its beauty, but also because it held spiritual power - as it was believed to be the embodiment of the wind and the "breath" that formed the Maya soul. In addition, scholars argue that its color was associated with water and vegetation. While the Maya used jadeite to create impressive jewelry, we also know that they placed jadeite beads in the mouths of the dead, perhaps as a means of extending the circle of life. Furthermore, many academics have argued that the demand for jadeite contributed to the rise of long distance trading networks as well as the rise of urban centers in ancient Mesoamerica.
