  Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954), "Musee National D'art Moderne" exhibition poster, lithograph in colors, 1956. A wonderful vintage poster created for the retrospective exhibition of Matisse's oeuvre at the Musee National d'Art Moderne in Paris - July through November of 1956. Featured in is brilliant Expressionist/Fauvist style, is Matisse's 1941 painting entitled, "Still Life with Magnolia" (currently in Musee Nazional d'Art Moderne Centre Pompidou, Paris), set in a white mat and framed under glass. According to Le Centre Pompidou curatorial team, in the spring of 1948, Matisse would write to his son Pierre that his most recent paintings, "impress everyone who has seen them because they are vivid and rich." Size: 34.25" L x 26.25" W (87 cm x 66.7 cm) framed
  
  According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's press release for "Matisse: In Search of True Painting-An Exploration of Matisse's Painting Process" (December 4, 2012 - March 17, 2013) which included "Still Life with Magnolia" - "In December 1945, six recent paintings by Matisse were displayed at the Galerie Maeght in Paris. Each was juxtaposed with large framed photographs documenting its evolution. The photographs are not depictions of related works; they trace the evolution of the canvas they surround. Matisse embraced the opportunity to put his process on display and in so doing, dispelled the notion that he worked spontaneously. He insisted that the only point of the exhibition was to present “the progressive development of the artworks through their various respective states toward definitive conclusions and precise signs.” By agreeing to make the photographs public, Matisse tacitly acknowledged that their presence added to the viewers’ understanding and appreciation of his work." The Metropolitan Museum's exhibition recreated three walls of that historic Galerie Maeght exhibition, including La France (1939, Hiroshima Museum of Art), The Dream (1940, private collection), and this paintin, Still Life with Magnolia (1941, Centre Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris).
  
  One of the founders of Fauvism, Matisse was a leader of "Les Fauves" (wild beasts) - a group of avant garde artists who painted in bold colors, shocking their audiences with their exaggerated hues. During this early modern period, the artistic establishment was offended by their paintings, because they saw the Fauves' use of color as wild and unrestrained. 'Les Fauves' argued that color possessed a spiritual quality that was inextricably connected to emotions, and for this reason, they used the most highly saturated colors. Furthermore, rather than use color to describe their subject matter in a naturalistic way, color was intended to express the artist's feelings about his/her subject. These ideas liberated future generations of artists to explore color in modernist compositions.
