Juan Quezada Celado (Mexican, Mata Ortiz, 1940 to 2022) ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A fine handmade pottery vase by Juan Quezada, an internationally renowned Mexican artist accredited with reviving and transforming the traditional pottery of Mata Ortiz Mexico. This red on black vessel has a contemporary interpretation of Paquime / Casas Grandes motifs painted with red clay and oxide pigments over the highly polished black surface. The village of Mata Ortiz became a world-famous center for ceramic production due to the renewed interest in traditional pottery and economic success that Quezada and his family created. The underside is signed by the artist. Size: 6" Diameter x 7" H (15.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
Juan Quezada is a pivotal figure in the revival of traditional Mexican pottery, specifically the Mata Ortiz style. His innovative techniques and intricate designs have not only preserved a nearly-lost tradition from the Paquime and Casas Grandes culture, but also brought global recognition to the art form. Quezada's impact extends beyond his art, as he has empowered the Mata Ortiz community, creating economic opportunities and fostering a renewed sense of cultural pride. The intricate abstract motifs in black and red on a tan ground are directly . In fact, Quezada's early work was sometimes mistaken as ancient pottery and sold under that pretense.
