Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States, Tlingit, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A cedar wood dance wand of a massive size painted with formline zoomorphic motifs and tassels made from black horsehair and turkey feathers. The piece is paddle shaped with a flattened blade that tapers to a cylindrical grip wrapped in vegetal cords and seal fur. Massive staffs / wands were carried by people of authority, the painted totemic animals representing family and clan affiliation. The lightweight cedar is the ideal choice for this huge staff in order for one person to carry. Size: 95.75" L x 6" W (243.2 cm x 15.2 cm)
