Ancient Near East, probably Luristan, ca. 800 BCE. A massive ancient bronze horse bit, rare because it features an iron center attachment which dates it to the Early Near Eastern Iron Age rather than Bronze Age. It is believed that ancient war horses were of small size and stature but a monstrous bit like this conveys a different story. When put together, it is 8 inches long without the iron attachments in the center. With the iron center, this one would have been an additional 2 inches for a total length of 10 inches across! The ribbed surface is really beautiful and made for a highly attractive yet highly functional mouth bit for the horse. A massive beast would have used this bit and it is possible it was meant for a large, powerful draft horse that would have pulled a chariot in battle. Size: 8" H (20.3 cm)
Despite the loss of the iron terminals, a portion of the original iron is still present, and the fact that this was a bi-metal object using iron (in this time iron was extremely expensive and rare) makes it all the more valuable and rare. One must hold this piece to appreciate its amazing weight and design as well as its tactile feel. The bronze possesses both exceptional and solid preservation as well as a prized green patina. A fine ancient artifact of mounted warfare and horse military gear from the ancient Near East.
