North America, Montana, Glendive, Hell Creek Formation, Cretaceous Period 70 to 66.6 Million years ago. An amazing fossilized bone from a Triceratops (Triceratops horridus), one of the most famous dinosaurs. This massive bone is the scapula (shoulder blade) and exemplifies the massive size of these dinosaurs. The bone is elongated and rounded along the top, maintains a relatively uniform width along its length, and has a protruding ridge that courses across the obverse. The entire surface has developed lustrous areas of brown patina commensurate with the process of fossilization. Triceratops was first found just west of Denver, Colorado, in the town of Morrison, in 1887, by Arthur Lakes and named by Othniel Charles Marsh, these large horned animals were initially mistaken for a form of bison before they realized they represented a type of dinosaur. Size: 39" L x 11" W (99.1 cm x 27.9 cm)
