Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. early 20th century CE. An enormous head of the Buddha, carved from wood and painted with brilliant gold gilt and red pigments. The hair is formed from hundreds of glass spikes applied to the head as hair nodules. This head was likely part of a massive figure that may have been housed inside a temple or the main assembly hall of a monastery. Size: 16" Diameter x 30" H (40.6 cm x 76.2 cm); 45" H (114.3 cm) on included custom stand; stand base: 20" L x 20" W (50.8 cm x 50.8 cm); gold quality: 21% to 29.2% (equivalent to 5K+ to 7K)

Head is fragment of larger statue. Chip and loss to wood on neck as shown. Losses and chips to some of the glass hair spikes, but most are intact. Dust / mineral buildup on glass. Wood ushnisha spire finial is not attached and rests in a socket. Some rubbing and fading to gilt and pigments on high pointed areas, but overall great coloration and lovely preservation.
