Pre-Columbian, Chile, Mapuche, Inca Period, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A very rare type of Mapuche clava with a curved crescent-moon shaped blade and a tubular handle, finely carved from an attractive black stone and adorned with an incised Inca star motif (placing it in the Inca period) and diagonal frets along the incurved side. Mapuche shamans held scepters like this example by their handles while they were attached to their wrists via knotted threads strung through a drilled hole. However, given that a handle perforation is absent on this clava, this piece was likely a ceremonial weapon symbolizing the owner's elite status and authority. A stupendous lapidary example from the ancient Mapuche! Size: 11.125" L x 3" W (28.3 cm x 7.6 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on included custom stand.
In general, the celestial realm was very important to the Inca culture. The sun and moon were regarded as deities, and consequently, pillars as well as temples were laid out in a specific manner, so that these celestial bodies would pass over the pillars or through the windows on particular days like the summer solstice. In addition, the Inca believed that the great creator god Viracocha (also Wiracocha, Apu Qun Tiqsi Wiraqutra, Con-Tici, and Kon-Tiki) strategically planned for the protection of all living beings, and that each star was associated with a particular type of animal. The group of stars known as the Pleiades was especially linked to the lives of animals. Rather than being regarded as a greater god, this group of stars was considered a huaca, and Inca shamans made sacrifices to it. Perhaps this piece was ceremoniously used for such practices.
