Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A collection of 5 monks and a Buddha in Mandalay style, carved from wood that graduate in height with the Buddha distinguishable by his size, topknot ushnisha, and crown. The surfaces are lacquered, gilt, and shimmering glass shard inlays accentuate their lavish robes and pedestals. They each stand facing forward holding an alms bowl before them, eyes cast downwards. These statues may have decorated a monastery or temple grounds as a symbol of modesty and a devotional way of life, the monks may also represent the main disciples of Buddha. These are best displayed when lined up from smallest to largest! Condition
Stable fissures and chips throughout. Some losses to the glass inlays and fading / chipping to pigments. Overall great condition!
