Ancient Central Asia, Northwestern Iran to Eastern Turkey, Luristan Culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A bronze horse bit, accompanied by matching cheekpieces in the shape of two horses, cast using the lost-wax technique. Notably, the front and rear feet of the animals are hobbled (tied together), which may symbolize restraint, capture, or the subduing of these powerful beasts. In Luristan culture, horse ownership was a significant indicator of social status and military prowess, with horses highly valued for their roles in warfare, trade, and transportation. Additionally, they served as a powerful symbol of authority among chieftains and elite individuals. The intricate craftsmanship of Luristan horse fittings, often adorned with bronze and gold, was commonly buried with elite horse owners to accompany them in the afterlife. As there is no visible wear on the bit, this was perhaps made for burial. Size: 8.5" L x 4" W x 5" H (21.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 12.7 cm); height with included custom stand: 6.5" H (16.5 cm).
