Luigi Kasimir (Austro-Hungarian, 1881-1962), "Holder Hall", 1926, color etching and aquatint, estate signed in pencil at lower center, printed on Luigi Kasimir watermarked wove paper. A beautiful colored etching depicting Holder Hall of Princeton University by Luigi Kasimir - one of the first artists to develop the technique of colored etching. Holder Hall is presented in all of its Gothic glory - with its slate roofs, leaded casement windows, vaulted cloisters, and beautiful finialed pinnacles - in all of its Gothic glory. Size: plate mark measures 11.75" W x 16.875" H (29.8 cm x 42.9 cm); sheet measures 17.125" W x 22.875" H (43.5 cm x 58.1 cm)
Prior to Kasimir's technique, color was applied to prints in a relatively haphazard manner. However, Kasimir first created a fine sketch, usually in pastel. Next, he transfered the design on several plates - as many as 4 to 6 - one after the other - and then applied the color to the plate BY HAND.
