Luigi Kasimir (1881-1962), "New York, Queensborough Bridge", colored etching, estate signed in pencil at lower center, dated in plate ("New York, April 1936") on lower left and printed on Luigi Kasimir watermarked wove paper. A beautiful colored etching depicting the Queensborough Bridge (also Queensboro Bridge, 59th Street Bridge, Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge) - a cantilever bridge over the East River in New York City completed in 1909 - with a fabulous view of the Manhattan skyline in the distance. Kasimir is best known for his etchings of European and American cities as well as landmarks throughout the world. In addition, Kasimir was one of the first artists to develop the technique of the colored etching. Size: plate mark 16.625" W x 11.5" H (42.2 cm x 29.2 cm); sheet measures 23.5" W x 18.75" H (59.7 cm x 47.6 cm)
Prior to Kasimir's technique, color was applied to prints in a relatively haphazard manner. However, Kasimir first created a fine sketch, usually in pastel. Next, he transfered the design on several plates - as many as 4 to 6 - one after the other - and then applied the color to the plate BY HAND.
