Luigi Kasimir (1881-1962), "Columbia University", colored etching, ca. 1963, estate signed in pencil at lower center, printed on Luigi Kasimir watermarked wove paper. A beautiful colored etching depicting Columbia University. Kasimir is best known for his etchings of European and American cities as well as landmarks throughout the world. In addition, Kasimir was one of the first artists to develop the technique of the colored etching. Prior to Kasimir's technique, color was applied to prints in a relatively haphazard manner. However, Kasimir first created a fine sketch, usually in pastel. Next, he transfered the design on several plates - as many as 4 to 6 - one after the other - and then applied the color to the plate BY HAND. Size: 18" W x 14.125" H (45.7 cm x 35.9 cm); 24.375" W x 21.25" H (61.9 cm x 54 cm) sheet
