North America, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Mimbres Valley, ca. 950 to 1150 CE. A wonderful pottery bowl of a minimalist utilitarian form shaped via the coil-and-scrape technique. The bowl presents with a round yet stable base, gradually expanding walls, and a thick, annular rim surrounding the deep basin decorated with russet red pigment atop a cream ground. The interior of the basin features a register of concentric rings above a pair of parallel rings along the upper rim as well as a pleasing avian creature in the center. The plump, right-facing bird has a rotund body adorned with zigzags, sinuous legs in front of an almost fish-like tail, a single outstretched wing, and a perky head with a single eye and a narrow beak. Though undecorated, the exterior surfaces exhibit a smooth, lustrous, and highly burnished presentation. Size: 7.1" W x 3.625" H (18 cm x 9.2 cm)
The Mimbres people occupied the mountain and river valleys of southwestern New Mexico; the name we know them by is from the Spanish word for the willows that grew alongside the river valleys. The artists responsible for creating pottery vessels like this were women, and the remains of many Mimbres women have been found in burial sites accompanied by pottery making tools.
