East Africa, Kenya, Sericho, ca. 2016 CE. A gorgeous fragment of a Pallasite meteorite; a shard of celestial material made of shimmering kamacite and olivine. This meteorite landed in Kenya in prehistoric times, but the extraterrestrial stones were not identified as Pallasite material until 2016. Two herders came across the strewn field while searching for a wayward camel, and they realized the striking similarities these strange rocks had with meteorites, so they collected many samples, which were later confirmed as Pallasites. People living the area had collected these stunning stones for years, not realizing they came from outer space, and no wonder - this example is gorgeous! One face is cut and polished to show off the composition of the Pallasite. The nickel-iron matrix known as kamacite, glimmers and frames the crystalline olivine suspended within - the golden and amber brown hues. Olivine is more commonly recognized as the gemstone peridot. Size: 2" Diameter x 1.5" W (5.1 cm x 3.8 cm); weight: 61.8 grams.
