- Lot Description
Louis Recchia (b. 1949). "Masterpiece Theatre" mixed media (reverse painting and collage) n.d. Signed by the artist in reverse at lower left. A whimsical mixed media piece comprised of reverse painting and collage elements, with an equally playful embellished frame by Louis Recchia. The collage elements include cutout images of Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d 'Avignon" as well as a falling classical column. Recchia set these before a faux painted green marble background. Before the collage are reversed paintings of a Matisse-inspired floral arrangement on a table as well as Chagall-inspired motifs - a leaping 4-legged green animal and a dancer or circus performer on a white horse. Recchia's ebullient artistic energy extends to the frame which is decorated with a variety of buttons, mirror pieces, miniature ceramic tiles, and found metal electronic components - all against a background that is painted with zigzagging skeins of white paint over a sky blue ground. Size: 21" L x 23.2" W x 2.25" deep (53.3 cm x 58.9 cm x 5.7 cm)
About the artist: "Louis Recchia has been producing contemporary art in Denver for over three decades. Over the years, his paintings have been shown in many places including the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; and the Denver Art Museum.
'The central theme in my work is the question of who we are. It explores the emotions and relationships of individuals to each other as well as to society.'
'The found objects in my work are used much as an anthropologist might study the artifacts of past cultures, giving insights to who these people were. The things we make, value and then discard reveal more about us than words ever could. The ubiquitous use of mirrors in my work reinforces this theme of looking at ourselves; though the image is invariably distorted and fragmented.'"
