East Asia, Japan, Meiji, ca. late 19th century CE. A charming ensemble of three iron tea kettles, all elaborately adorned with relief designs and presenting forms comprised of concave, circular bases, curved spouts, discoid lids with central knobs, and high-arching handles. Boasting a deep hue of taupe, the first vessel displays a textured surface decorated with the low relief image of a horse galloping in front of a distant mountain range. One side of the iron pot shows the front of the horse, while the other displays its verso. A lovely seashell motif border decorates the rim of the vessel, and an abstract, phytomorphic design has been incised on the handle. Next, the russet-colored kettle exhibits a bulbous body adorned with several slender, overlapping arches, resembling thin blades of grass. Size: 7.75" in diameter x 9.5" H (19.7 cm x 24.1 cm)
Showcasing an apple-form body and a brass lid, the last tea kettle has been divided horizontally design-wise, so that the top half of the vessel is embellished with dozens of petite elevated dots and the bottom displays a fine textured surface.
