East Asia, China, Han dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A wonderful ensemble of eight mold-made pottery attendant figures known as mingqi, or "spirit utensil", created to care for a deceased individual of high status in the tomb. All shown standing, three of the figures are female and wear long robes tied with belts as well as tall headdresses with flowing veils as they place their right hands on their stomachs and rest their left arms at their sides. An additional female statue serves as the tallest figure and is dressed in a knee-length dress with a cape, a sash, a belt, and a fascinating hat that flares at the back as she holds her hands together at her torso. Perhaps representing a child, the shortest figure also wears a knee length garment and a coiffure or headdress that flares in the back, while holding both hands together at the chest. Two additional figures wear top buns and hold both arms to their chests. One of these is dressed in a shorter tunic-like garment, while the other is draped in an ankle-length robe. The last figure dons a flowing floor-length garment and gently bows the head, holding both hands together at the torso. Though all boast lovely cream and sienna-hued surfaces, four of the figures are decorated with pretty remains of red, grey, and beige pigments. Size of largest: 1.75" W x 8" H (4.4 cm x 20.3 cm)
The Han Dynasty was a period of wealth and stability for China, and the burial places of their rulers reflected this prosperity. Inside of burial mounds, hundreds and sometimes thousands of figures were placed, recreating the daily life of the Emperor's court or a noble person's world. The creation of all these pottery figures spawned a huge industry, and the remains of workshops have also been found near burial mounds.

Condition
One has had head reattached. Two have been repaired from three pieces. Expected surface wear with light abrasions, minor nicks/chips, and softening of detail. Otherwise, all are very nice with lovely earthen deposits and impressive remaining pigments.
