Egypt, Ptolemaic to early Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 332 BCE to first half of 1st century CE. A gorgeous group of petite opaque glass inlays - meant to be inserted into recesses in wooden coffins and limestone reliefs - composed of a myriad of polychrome hues. Four bifacial discs feature six-petaled flowers formed via the mosaic technique; long canes with one design were made and then sliced into sections like these. One millefiori fragment features a raised, curved ridge on one side that resembles a human ear, and the largest millefiori fragment boasts blue-and-yellow flower petals. The most striking piece is a blue-and-white falcon head with a red eye and beak, perhaps representing the falcon-headed sun god Ra or Qebehsenuef, one of the four Sons of Horus. A visually pleasing ensemble of ancient Egyptian glass! Size of largest (millefiori w/ flowers): 0.875" W x 1.625" H (2.2 cm x 4.1 cm)
